Who, what, where, why, to what extent are we? |

More than 1 person has emailed to inquire exactly who we are, what I do at Apple, etc. Here's my official answer: First, as stated, this has nothing to do with Apple. I do not write the articles (save for the binhex article) and am not a dedicated help desk. I am, however, looking for work, so if your company needs a Macintosh Technical Support person (if you're an ISP or just in a company w/ an IS department) drop me a line on job leads. I'll move! What this site is is a resource for Macintosh users everywhere. Apple writes the Information Alley but they've done it in, originally, Acrobat/No Hands Common Ground/SeText, and, now, SeText only via email listservers. This leaves HTML. I originally began by HTMLing all Volume 2 issues, carefully marking up the SeText and then using GraphicsConverter to grab the graphics from the Acrobat version. Apple eventually made a HTML version of their own, but only 4 issues were available. They decided to go to a daily format distributed via email in SeText format. After talking (typing?) it over with the site administrators, I decided to continue doing the project. The back issues (old Acrobat, Volume 2s) are extremely popular (as evidenced by the Binhex article :), so we've kept them. What is the role of the site administrators?: The site administrators are generous people who donate their bandwidth, hard drive space, CPU cycles, and, of course, a fragment of their weekly time to up keep the archives on their individual site. We distribute updates via private FTP sites, so the administrator ends up reading my instructions and flipping a lot of files. I cannot adaquetately express how important they are to this project. They don't do the HTML, but without them this place cannot exist. The HTML is completely done by me, although the admins end up catching errors, many times, before you even see them. So what are we? A group of volunteers who give of themselves for the good of the Macintosh Way. We do this because we love our platform and want to help people using it. We've mirror locations all about the world, including some behind-the-scenes ftp servers! (thanks guys!). I must state, however, what we cannot (or do not feel obligated to) do for you. We cannot become your help desk, none of us have time. The Site Administrators are just that, site admins. They're, even less than I, responsible for the content. If the SITE is toast, email them, if an article is toast, email ME. If an article makes no sense, you can email me but I don't know how much help I can be. That being said, I like to help people if I can, but I can't gaurantee anything!
