Huh?

These quotes come from the many who have written in to express this opinions, etc. on UIA. Not everyone that has written is quoted, not everyone is IDed, but I thank you for taking the time to write. These are in rough chronological order.

The only real negative quote I've ever received:

Sir, you and your cohorts need to shit down and shut-up. Your site is obtuse, poorly designed, lacks any serious augmenting aides, and generally is a poor representation of what the WWW can do. No Java, no animations, and you cater to every tiny niche browser. You are frankly incompetent pretenders to what real webmasters are.

Well, gee thanks for that. The person must not have been very public, because he went to lengths to delete his name and such from the email (don't worry, if you're reading, I still know who you are, just not said anything :). To the guy's defense UIA wasn't on the bleeding edge, but, then again, I've always been more concerned about content then showing off.

And the rest of the quotes:

Read your comments re 'why ... glitz' --- thank you for understanding that the information content is more important than the immature need to 'show off / look at me, guys! oboy aren't I cool!!! / sorry your browser crashed, but EVERYbody knows you should be using Netscape/2/3/Gold/Windows 95/ftp/blah blah blah'

what this old man wants is the answer to questions, not sorry little useless geek graphics and nonsense; hey, life IS short, and thank you for helping not waste it...

Just found out about your pages via Macworld Online e-mail. Came over to see what they were talking about. Read article about no glitz and I agreee whole heartedly with you. Glitz is pretty to look at; but I find too many sites going overboard with all of the animation etc. I have even had pages where it is hard to get out because there is so much activity going on. It is the information that is important to me. Look forward to digging in to the information you supply and will give you more feedback when I have become more familiar with what you offer. What I have seen so far looks great to me. Good job and keep up the good work.

I just said to my office mate that you are the most impressive person that I have come in contact with on the web. I have never had anyone respond to my inquiries before so quickly (if at all)! Thank you sooooooo much!

In appreciate your mention your article on the home page regarding helping people whose IS department should be helping them, and not you, as I am new to being a Macintosh System Admin. At my AT&T site, this is one of our biggest issues and thus is causing those who have the power to say "NO MORE MACS, YOU WILL NOW BUY A PC". So because of your diligent efforts, you may be saving our remaining Mac users from the hell of being forced to use a PC!!!

Let me join the minimalists. Far too many web pages take forever to load (esp on my 14.4 system at home), adding images that add nice colors but little information.

Do you know the "law of the hammer?" It is, Give a kid a hammer and EVERYTHING in sight will need to be hit. I have found that graphics inclusion is a hammer. A few years ago I was studying kids writing, comparing samples of writing of kids using computers to writing of kids not using computers (remember back that far?).

One thing that became evident very quickly for the computer written material was the kids really like to insert graphics. Unfortunately, the graphics did not necessarily add to the text. In fact, it did not necessary even relate to the text. Where the graphic and text did relate, I am not sure that the text was not a function of the graphic available. In other words, graphics were used because they were available, not necessarily because they enhanced the writing. Incidently, that seems to have toned down. Once you have shown you CAN add graphics, you don't have to do it all the time.

Web pages are similar to these early writing-on-a-computer efforts. Tools get used because they exist, not necessarily because they add to the presentation.

I consider it a sign of mature writing to know when NOT to use a glitzy tool!

Great job! I was waiting for something like this from Apple and once again a third party comes through.

[I]'m so glad that info alley is finally in an easily readable HTML format, but-and I HATE to say this cause you are doing a great job otherwise, your graphics leave a little to be desired. I am mostly referring to your intial graphic - homesidebar.jpeg. It's nice BUT the white text is hard to read. If i were to make that graphic, i would have made the background lighter and the text darker, not just white because it just make it hard to read at such a small point size.

The unofficial.jpg is a nice idea, but the colors don't seem to represent apple. I know the apple colors are there, but it's the way they land on the text, it just gives it a huge glow of bland yellow. Now that one may be more a personal call, but just thought i'd share it with you.

Please don't take offense, i do like what you've done and commend you on it. If you need some help, please feel free to call on me. I support Macintosh as much as i can, and would relish helping you however i could, and fortunately, time does allow me to assist.

Yeah, he's right. But graphics are my big weakness.

Just wanted to let you know that I think your site is WOW! AMAZING! I can't believe you spent so much time doing all this. It looks great, and it's very useful. Much more pleasant than the Apple site! -Isabelle Laliberte (lali@odyssee.net)

Call it vanity, call it ego, but this is the quote I'm most proud of:

Very very cool. Thank you for all the work I know this meant for you. It's a great service to Mac users.
