If your computer gives you this message each time it starts up, "QuickTime installation has failed because QuickTime was already installed", it means that you have two copies of the QuickTime extension in your Extensions folder (inside the System Folder). You either have two different versions of the QuickTime extension or two copies of the QuickTime extension that are the same version, but are named differently.

If you open your Extensions folder, you will probably see one extension called QuickTime and one extension called Quicktime 2.0. If you do a Get Info on each of these items you may see that they are both version 2.0. Or you may find out that one version is an older version.

  • If you have QuickTime 2.0 and an older version of QuickTime, remove the older version.

  • If you have two copies of QuickTime 2.0 it does not matter which version you remove.

Drag the unwanted version to the Trash and select Empty Trash from the Special menu. Then restart your computer. The Famous Apple!
