TOPIC

How can small quantities of excess Color LaserWriter 12/600PS fuser oil be disposed of?

DISCUSSION

The Color LaserWriter 12/600 PS printer fuser oil bottle holds 310ml of a silicone based oil which depletes itself during normal printing over a period of approximately 10,000 pages. Materials handling and disposal can be regulated at the federal, state, and local levels of government making it impossible to provide general information on whether fuser oil is considered a hazardous waste.

Current industry recommendations suggest purchasing the smallest reasonable quantity of chemicals, lubricants, and other substances to avoid the need to dispose of any surplus. In the event that excess oil is purchased and cannot be used, consult the Yellow Pages under the heading "Waste" for a listing of companies that can properly dispose of the waste according to local, state, and federal guidelines that are appropriate for your area. Additional information such as federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations, and a listing of approved disposal facilities, can be found at the EPA Internet web site using the following URL:

Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are published by manufacturers to provide safety, transportation, and disposal related information. According to section 7 of the Material Safety Data Sheet for the Color LaserWriter 12/600 PS fuser oil, the oil can be burned or disposed of in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations. The MSDS provides information that may help your waste disposal specialist determine the best method for disposal. A copy of the MSDS can be obtained in the United States by calling 1-800-SOS-APPL.The Famous Apple!
