Contents

Changes from AppleShare Workstation 3.6.2 Changes from AppleShare Workstation 3.6.3 & 3.6.4 System Software recommendations

Changes from AppleShare Workstation 3.6.2

  • AppleShare Workstation 3.6.2 was modified to allowed the user to change his or her password during alias resolution. This modification caused two problems:

  • Utilities (such as virus-protection utilities) that patch GetResource could cause AppleShare Workstation software to crash when opening an alias that required a password.

  • The system could hang if a background application performed file I/O while an alias that required a password was being opened.

For AppleShare Workstation 3.6.3, this modification was removed. It will be re-implemented in a future version of AppleShare Workstation software.

  • A conflict with applications that quit the Finder, notably the Apple Installer, was fixed.

Changes from AppleShare Workstation 3.6.3 & 3.6.4

  • AppleShare Workstation 3.6.3 and 3.6.4 differ only in the bundle bit being set on the AppleShare extension.

  • AppleShare Workstation 3.6.5 fixes some internal version strings that were not updated with 3.6.4.

System Software recommendations

  • Computers running system software prior to 7.5.1 should run AppleShare Workstation 3.5.

  • Computers running system software 7.5.1 or later should run AppleShare Workstation 3.6.5.

PS Fax Cover Page Utilities is available for posting. It can be found in:

Apple SW Updates -> US -> Macintosh -> Unsupported

Description: The two enclosed Adobe utilities are provided to help users create custom cover pages for their Apple LaserWriter w/PostScript Fax card printers (LaserWriter Select 360f, LaserWriter Pro 810f, and LaserWriter 16/600f). System 7.1 or later is recommended.

This Adobe software is being provided for test purposes and does not come with Apple technical support. Do not call Apple technical support or the Apple Assistance Center with questions, comments, or problem reports about PostScript Fax Cover Page Utilities.

The enclosed file is a self-extracting archive. To use, download, double-click the downloaded file (this decompresses it).

Files in this archive CoverPageExport 1.1b1 - PhotoShop Plug-in to create PS Fax custom cover pages.
Tiff/PICT to Fax 1.1b1 - Stand-alone utility to create PS Fax custom cover pages.

Adobe Acrobat Technical Notes

5140.UsingCSPlugIn.pdf - How to use the PhotoShop Plug-In.
5142.CreatingFaxCS.pdf - Describes how to create your own custom cover page via PostScript.
5143.TIFFPICT.pdf - How to use the TIFF/PICT To Fax Utility.

Adobe Acrobat Reader is available free of charge in the Utilities folder here or at Adobe http://www.adobe.com/supportservice/custsupport/tsfilelib.html

Important Information about both utilities:

When faxing landscape-oriented jobs, "PostScript" must be checked in the fax printer driver options dialog or else the cover page will not come out correctly.

Adobe Photoshop CoverPageExport Plug-in

The CoverPageExport plug-in will work with Adobe Photoshop versions 2.5, 2.5.1, and 3.0 for the Macintosh. The plug-in's output has been tested with the Apple LaserWriter driver version 8.2.3f, and Adobe Fax Printer driver version 8.2.1.

What the Plug-in Creates

The plug-in will create a cover page for the fax driver that includes your black and white Adobe Photoshop image. The cover page uses a standard layout for information such as the recipient's and sender's phone and fax numbers, but it will also place the Photoshop image in the upper left corner of the page design. The cover page cannot be viewed by any application; it is a PostScript language file that can be used by Adobe's fax printer driver when sending faxes. Note: Your Photoshop image should have a maximum height of 194 points (approximately 2.6 inches), and a maximum width of 572 points (approximately 7.9 inches). An image larger than that size will be cropped on the bottom and/or right side(s). If your image is larger than this size, you should consider using Adobe Photoshop to either crop the image using the Crop option in the Edit menu, or scale the image to a smaller size via the Image Size dialog box under the Image menu.

For additional details on the Plug-In, please read the enclosed Adobe Technote, 5140.UsingCSPlugIn.pdf.

TIFF/PICT To Fax Cover Page Utility

The TIFF/PICT to Fax Cover Page program will work on a Macintosh computer, running System 7.0 or greater. The input for the program is any simple uncompressed 1-bit TIFF or PICT image file. The program's output has been tested with the Apple LaserWriter driver version 8.2.3f, and Adobe Fax Printer driver version 8.2.1.

The TIFF/PICT to Fax Cover Page program provides a simple way to generate custom cover sheets for use with either of the PostScript Fax printer drivers listed above. The program takes an uncompressed 1-bit TIFF or PICT image and exports a fax cover sheet that contains this image. The Adobe Acrobat document included offers simple step-by-step instructions for using the program.

For additional details on the Utility, please read the enclosed Adobe Technote, 5143.TIFFPICT.pdf.
