These instructions are design to assist you with installing and configuring
Open Transport and Open Transport PPP to connect to the Welch Medical Libraries
Remote Access server.
UPDATE: With the intro of system 8.5, Apple combined the Apple Remote
Access Control Panel and the PPP control panel into one new
control panel call Remote Access. These instructions where written
to the PPP control panel, but unless otherwise noted in the instructions,
please substitute Remote Access control panel when PPP control
panel is mentioned
If you already have Open Transport and Open Transport PPP installed and
just need to configure it, jump to Step #6
Step # Task
- Remove any existing PPP software such at FreePPP, Config PPP, and
the PPP extension
- Do a find for PPP (Use the Finder's Find function - Find under
the file menu)
- Any item that is in any folder in your system folder (Control
Panel, Extensions, Etc.), please remove.
- Determine what networking software you have installed and what version.
- If you have Open Transport Open Transport Software active, you
will see "AppleTalk" and "TCP/IP" listed in
your control panels window. If it is there, go on to Step #3
- If it was not there check to see if you already have Open Transport
Software on you Mac, but not active by going to your Apple Extra's
folder and looking for an application call "Network Software
Selector"
Network Software Selector's Icon looks like
- If you do have the Network Software Selector, run the application
and choose to "Use Open Transport Networking" You
will have to restart your computer to make this active
- If you don't go on to Step #4
- Check what version by opening either the AppleTalk or TCP/IP control
panels and doing a "Get Info". If it is version 1.1.2, you
do not need to reinstall Open transport, just go on to Step #5.
- Install Open Transport software version 1.1.2.
- Install Open Transport PPP software. (OT/PPP)
- Open the PPP Control Panel. It will look like the below diagram .
The control panel has a Connection area with button for Registered User
and a button for Guest, fields for your Name, password, and Phone number.
We will not be entering your username or
password here.

- Configure the PPP control panel by clicking the Guest button
and entering the Welchlink phone number of 410-955-7087 on the
Number: field. Note: if you have call waiting, precede the phone number
with *70, to turn off your call waiting feature which
would interrupt your PPP connection. The PPP control panel window should
now look like.
Remote Access Control Panel Change. For
the remote Access control panel, go ahead and enter your information
as a registered users. Enter your login name and password along with
the phone number

- Open the Modem Control panel by going to the PPP menu and choosing
Modem. Once open, select your type of modem from the list. If your modem
is not listed, either install the CCL file for your modem from your
modems software disk (consult your modem manual for information on this),
or choose the Null Modem with the speed closest to your modem. If you
have to install your CCL file, you may need to restart your computer,
or at least close the modem control panel and reopen it to see your
modem listed. An example Modem control Panel is shown below.

- Close the Modem Control Panel and then Open the TCP/IP control panel
by going to the PPP menu and choosing TCP/IP. Make the following changes.
Select PPP in the Connect Via menu. Select Using PPP Server
in the Configure Menu. For name servers enter 128.220.59.13 <Press
Return> 128.220.59.78 <Press Return> 128.220.2.7
then <Press Tab> to go to the Search Domains: and enter welch.jhu.edu
<Press Return> jhu.edu. When you are done it will look
similar to the below diagram.

- Close the TCP/IP Control Panel. You should now be back to the PPP
control Panel. Click the Options Button in the lower left of the PPP
window. You will be presented with an Options window with 3 tabs with
the headings of Redialing, Connection, and Protocol.
The Redialing tab is currently selected. There are no required setting
modifications for this page, although I would recommend setting the
number of times to redial to at least 5 or more. Also, since
there is no alternative number for the Welch dial in service, you will
leave the setting on Redial main number only. The Redialing section
looks like the below diagram.

- Click the tab for Connection to be taken to the Connection
options section. There are no required setting modifications for this
page, although I would recommend checking Connect automatically when
starting TCP/IP applications. With this selected, when you open
any ip application such as Telnet or Netscape, your PPP connection will
be established if it was not already open. If this is not checked, you
will have to open your PPP connection via the PPP control panel before
you open your TCP/IP applications.

- Click the tab for Protocol to be taken to the Protocol
options section. This section does have some required modifications
in order to use the Welch Dial in Service as well as some optional settings.
The optional settings are Allow error correction and compression
in modem and Use TCP header compression. I would leave these
at their default settings for now. You can decide whether nor not to
use them on your own at a later time. Now for the require changes. Check
the Connect to a command-line-host: option and then click the
Use Terminal window radio button just below that. Your Protocol
selection will look similar to the below diagram.

Remote Access Control Panel Change.
Below is the options window for the Remote Access control panel.
You will need to select PPP from the Use protocol menu to
gain access to the below options.

- Click OK to close the Options window. You will be brought back
to the PPP control Panel window. Click the Connect button to
start your connection. You should see the following steps in your stats
box of the PPP control panel. Idle, Dialing..., communicating at....,
and then you will be presented with a PPP Terminal Window. The connection
step diagrams are show below.

- Before entering any information in the PPP Terminal Window
click on the Settings button. you will be presented with the
PPP Terminal Windows Settings. If both the Close Terminal when PPP
is started and Prompt to save Connection Script on close
options are not checked, Check them. A diagram showing the window
is shown below.
- Click OK to close the PPP Terminal Settings window. Continue the log
in process by entering your Welchlink Login, Welchlink password, enter
1 at the Enter Number prompt, and then press Return. A diagram showing
the choices and what you see after pressing return is shown below.

- Next, you will be prompted to save your connect script. In the Save
Dialog box, select the location you want your script to be save and
also enter in a name of Welch Connection Script or enter any name of
your choice. Just remember what you called it and where you saved it.
A diagram is shown below.

- Click Save to save your script. After saving your script, the
PPP Terminal Window will close and you will see the PPP control panel
indicating you are connected by displaying the following in your Status
box: the speed at which you connected, the IP number of the port you
connected to, the Time connected, and Time remaining. Note: even though
it says unlimited, you are limited to 2 hours per session. Our communications
server does not support the option to tell you how much time you have
remaining. And example diagram is shown below.

- Before you go off and start using your TCP/IP applications, there
is one more step to complete so the log in is more automatic next time.
Click on the Options button, then click on the Protocols
tab, then click the Use connect script: button, then click on
the Import Script button, locate the script you just saved, select it,
and then choose open. You will be brought back to the Options window
with the Protocol section showing. On the Use connect script: line
you should now see the name of the file you just imported. Example shown
below

- Click OK to return to the PPP control panel, then go to the File Menu
and Quit. You will be prompted to Save changes to the current configuration.
Do save your changes. Reminder, you are still connected, so.... You
can use your TCP/IP applications like Netscape, etc. When you are done,
to disconnect, just open the PPP control panel and choose disconnect.
Since you did save your changes, the next time you connect, you will
not see the PPP terminal window as it will automatically log you in
via the script.
- Last item is an important note and instructions on how to change the
password when you change your Welchlink password. The script your created
earlier saves your username and password as plain text. This can be
a security concern to some, so just make a note of it. To change your
password after you have changed it on Welchlink you must open your script
file with any text editor like Simple Text, find your old password in
the script, highlight just your old password, and then enter your new
password. Save, and you are set for your next PPP Login
