Product Description

FileGuard is a mac security program. It's supposed to provide automatic transparent protection of documents, and protection for all volumes, folders and applications.

What I Liked about the programs.....

Installation was very easy. Ths instruction manual is one of the clearest I've come across. It describes precisely what to do without excess verbiage.

You just open FileGuard to protect items; you don't have to fool with umpteen different control panels.

There is one Admin, who can assign special priveleges to Super Users, and then there are regular Users.

You can partition a volume, and only protect one part, if you so desire. You can protect floppies, and send them to people who don't have FileGuard, who will then supposedly be able to use them with a minimum of effort. (I didn't get a chance to test that)

FileGuard works with AfterDark. Very nice, since I wouldn't want to give up AfterDark.

It's nice to be able to easily protect apps., contol panels or desk accessories.

You can save a complete configuration for use at a later date, or to copy between machines. Very convenient.

What I didn't like about the programs.....

If you are the Admin, and you have allowed a user to encrypt documents, you will not be able to access that encrypted document if the User forgets the password, or leaves the company.

If the volume is damaged, you must remove FileGuard before using repair utilities like Disk First Aid, Norton Disk Doctor, or MacTools. This could corrupt the data; a tricky thing if your Mac has crashed, and you are panicking.

You cannot protect the Trash; if you don't want Users to trash stuff, you need to put them in folders where Users don't have the Make Changes Privelege.

You can't put individual protection on PowerPC native applications; you must protect the folders they are in.
