Notes from the JHMI Mug Desk.

JHMI Mug Group information

Our group is very informal, as we are not incorporated, nor do we elect officers. As our group grows, this may change, but for now we'll keep it simple.

The current mission of the group is to provide a place where people who have an interest in the Macintosh Platform can come together for:

  1. Finding hardware/software solutions
  2. Peer member computer support
  3. General discussion of Macintosh issues on our campus
  4. Providing as much information and support to members as possible in an area where Macintosh support is rather slim to non-existent.
  5. Providing a way for Macintosh users to take advantage of Vendor discounts.

JHMI Mug Membership requirements/info

Our group only has one membership requirement thus far and that is to be a member of the JHMI MUG listserve. This listserv's purpose is to let members ask questions and hopefully have other experienced members provide assistance if they can. If the member is new or less experienced on the Macintosh, then they will have a resource for learning how to do new things with their Macintosh. This listserve will also be used for general announcements from the group's administrator. Information on how to subscribe to this listserve will be published shortly.

One other good reason to become a member: It's FREE. Yes, at the moment there is no membership fee and the group's resources (Web server and listserve) are currently provided by the Welch Medical Library. Because of this, I must say, the views expressed on the JHMI Mug web page and listserve are those of the respective authors and do not reflect the views of the Welch Medical Library or the Johns Hopkins University. If you are interested in becoming a member, please email mugadmin@mug.jhmi.edu with the subject of Membership request.

New Members only section!

In order to make sure that only our members are taking advantage of the membership privileges such as discounted software, etc, a members only section has been created. This area will be password protected shortly and not domain controlled like the JHU price lists. Each time the user id/password is changed, members will receive and email informing the of what the new information is. (hence part of the need to be on the JHMI Mug listserve)

Our group is also a member of the User Group Connection and as a result our members have some other benefits.

The User Group Connection has a web page on which special information for user group members is posted. Among some of the info is a special User Group member mailing list.

You can go to the main User Group Connection page to get to any of the for mentioned resources at http://www.ugconnection.com/. Or go directly to the User Group Members section at http://www.ugconnection.com/users/

Another benefit is the ability to purchase items from the User Group Store. The User Group Store offers hardware and software at a discount. They also offer the JHMI Mug points for every item sold to a JHMI Mug member. The group can redeem these points for products from the User Group Store. These products would be used to enhance our service to our members. So, if the price is right for you and they have what you are looking for, it would be good for you as well as a plus for the JHMI Mug group.

You can find the User Group Store at http://www.ugstore.com/

Have you had trouble finding a Macintosh Service Provider. If so, here is a list of some I have come across in the Baltimore area. A listing does not constitute and endorsement by the JHMI Mug, they are just some of the providers that we know of that do on-site service. Note to JHU folks, if the provider offers special JHU rates you will see [JHU] after the company name. (In the near further the [JHU] will a link you to the JHU Mac Server Providers page with their published rates for Hopkins)
